Music Photography Australia

I’m an Australian music photographer with more than 16 years of experience photographing musicians, bands, artists, concerts and festivals.

My music photography ranges from promotional portraits and press photography through to live performances, festivals, album artwork and images for publications, record labels and media.

I’ve photographed emerging artists through to internationally recognised musicians, working in venues, studios, backstage, on location and in the middle of festival crowds.

Whether you need a new set of promotional photographs, press images for an upcoming release or coverage of a live performance, the aim is to create photographs that reflect who you are as an artist and how you want your music presented.

Promotional Photography for Musicians

Good promotional photography should feel like it belongs to the artist.

That might mean carefully lit portraits, something raw and understated, photographs on location, a studio shoot, or images built around the visual identity of a particular release.

I work with solo artists, bands and other performers to create photographs for:

  • Press kits and publicity
  • Artist websites
  • Album and single artwork
  • Posters and tour promotion
  • Record labels
  • Editorial and media
  • Streaming platforms
  • Social media
  • Festival and venue promotion
  • General artist branding

We can work from an existing concept or develop the visual direction around your music, personality and how the photographs need to be used.

Photography that keeps working after the shoot

The goal is a versatile image library you can use across your website, social media, PR, advertising and print—not just a single hero image.

Live Music Photography

Live music was an important part of the beginning of my photography career, and I’ve photographed performances ranging from small club shows to major Australian music festivals.

My approach to live photography is to capture more than a photograph of somebody standing on a stage. Lighting, movement, interaction with the audience and the atmosphere of the performance are all part of telling the story of a show.

Over the years I’ve photographed artists across rock, electronic, hip-hop and other genres, including internationally recognised musicians as well as independent Australian artists.

For more information about dedicated concert and performance coverage, see my live music photography work.

Music Editorial & Press Photography

My photography career has included extensive editorial and press work, giving me experience working with publications, publicists, musicians and record labels under tight deadlines.

My music photography has appeared in publications including Triple J Magazine, The Wire, Xpress Magazine and DRUM! Magazine USA.

I’ve also photographed backstage and at festivals including Parklife, Southbound, Laneway and Future Music, as well as artists including Deep Purple, Crystal Castles and Drapht.

That editorial background is useful when photographs need to work across several different formats. A single shoot might need to provide hero images for a website, vertical photographs for social media, horizontal compositions for editorial layouts and straightforward portraits for publicity.

Portraits, Press Kits & Album Artwork

A music photography session doesn’t need to produce one particular kind of photograph.

Creating a mixture of portraits, wider environmental images and more spontaneous photographs can give you a library of material that can be used across releases, press, websites and social media.

Where photographs are intended for artwork or graphic design, images can also be composed with space for typography, logos and other design elements.

If you’re working with a designer, label, publicist or creative director, I’m happy to work from an existing brief and technical requirements.

Music Videos & Moving Image

My work with musicians also extends beyond still photography.

I work across cinematography and video production and can be involved in music projects requiring both still and moving images.

If you’re planning a video for a new release, you can also see my music video work and broader cinematography services.

Music Photography Across Australia

While I regularly work in Perth and Sydney, I’m available to travel for music photography projects throughout Australia.

For artists planning a release, tour, promotional campaign or new press kit, photography can be planned around the different ways the images will be used so that a single shoot produces a useful range of material.
